Journalism historian Michael Schudson, a Columbia University professor, says government, philanthropy, public radio, nonprofits and universities all should have a role in advancing the future of journalism. He says that until recently journalism “on the whole it has not been that great and I think there is a lot of work to be done.”
He says he hopes to see National Public Radio get more involved in local news gathering.
They do a great job nationally and globally, but there is very little that they do locally.
Schudson is the co-author with Leonard Downie of the Reconstruction of American Journalism.
